For the dental implant insertion procedure to work, there must be enough bone mass in the jaw and the bone must be strong enough to support the dental implant. If these conditions are not met, bone mass needs to be added through a bone augmentation procedure.
Specifically, bone addition is the intervention on the bone bed in order to increase its volume, through surgical techniques of adding substitute materials (bio-materials).
Bone addition is indicated in the following situations
- to increase bone supply in case of dental implant insertion
- to correct bone defects due to traumatic causes (accidents) or as a result of cystectomies
- after open-field curettage of periodontal pockets for the purpose of stabilizing the mobility-damaged tooth root
